The COEHP Honors Program requires that honors students gain expertise in oral presentation skills. To this end, honors students are required to present their Thesis/Projects at the Honors Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Symposium sponsored by the COEHP Honors Council. This symposium is scheduled the week prior to finals. Presentations will be in the form of a 15-20 minute summary of the student's work. Because the COEHP is diverse in its disciplines, you should strive to make your work intelligible to non-specialists. Do not assume that everyone is familiar with your field. Avoid technical jargon and define specialized terms. Focus on the creative and innovative aspects of your project. Following your presentation, there will be a brief question-and-answer period.
No single format will fit all presentations. The following format is a suggestion for those who will be presenting experimental data or exploratory works. Again, the best resource for advice is your faculty mentor.
| Background/Purpose | 2-3 Minutes |
| Methods | 2-3 Minutes |
| Results | 5-7 Minutes |
| Summary/Conclusion | 2-4 Minutes |
| Oral Presentation time | 12 Minutes |
| Question & Answers | 3 Minutes |
| Total: Not to exceed | 20 Minutes |
As an honors student preparing for the oral presentation, you are encouraged to rehearse your presentation beforehand. You may ask your colleagues and faculty mentor to listen to your rehearsal. After your presentation, ask for a critique and revise your presentation as necessary.
The room will be equipped with various presentation media (overhead, slide, and/or PowerPoint projectors) but you must notify the Office of the Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs of your media needs when submitting your abstract. If you are using a PowerPoint, you need to arrive 30 minutes prior to the symposium so that it may be loaded onto the computer.
